Planning a trip to a Christmas market this year but can’t decide which one? Here are some suggestions from USA TODAY 10Best's list of 2023 looking at holiday markets worth visiting across the U.S. The list was created by asking a panel of experts to nominate their top picks for holiday markets throughout the U.S., then readers voted for their favorites to determine the winners. USA TODAY 10Best's list of 2024 and closes on Monday, December 2 at noon ET. The top 10 winning markets will be announced on Friday, December 6.
No. 10: Kerstmarkt in Holland, Michigan. Holland, Michigan is best known for its spring tulips, but Kerstmarkt offers a good reason to visit in the winter. For five weekends in November and December, some 18 booths set up at 8th Street Marketplace to sell holiday decorations, gifts, and seasonal treats at this European-style market. Visits from Santa, dog sleds, and Dickens carolers add to the fun.
No. 9: Christmas Village in Philadelphia. Each holiday season, Philadelphia's Love Park hosts a German-style Christmas market. Christmas Village in Philadelphia includes more than 80 tradition wooden booths where international vendors sell ornaments, handcrafted gifts, jewelry, and traditional German treats. It's a perfect setting for a holiday photo op with the iconic LOVE statue, located right at the heart of the market.
No. 8: Christkindlmarket Chicago. During the holiday season, Chicago's Daley Plaza transforms into a European-style Christmas market inspired by the original in Nuremburg, Germany. Visitors will find festive entertainment, delicious food and drinks, plenty of shopping, and mulled wine.
No. 7: Savannah Christmas Market in Savannah, Georgia. European and Southern traditions blend and sparkle with holiday charm at the Savannah Christmas Market. This traditional Salzburg Christmas market brought to the Plant Riverside District includes live performances, family-friendly activities, and holiday-themed events. Enjoy Christmas shopping opportunities, a tree lighting ceremony, and a Savannah Harbor Boat Parade of Lights.
No. 6: Downtown D.C. Holiday Market in Washington, D.C. The Downtown Holiday Market in the nation’s capital celebrates the season with more than 70 vendors setting up shop, selling a variety of handcrafted and boutique wares. Visitors can also enjoy live music at The Market Stage.
No. 5: Old World Christmas Market in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. The Old World Christmas Market in Elkhart Lake takes place for 10 days each December at The Osthoff Resort. Visitors can shop for specialty artisan items in heated tents decorated for the season, munch on schnitzel and apple strudel, and sip hot glühwein.
No. 4: Denver Christkindlmarket. The Mile High City celebrates the season with its annual Denver Christkindlmarket. The festival at Civic Center Park features craft and food vendors from Colorado and Europe, as well as live music.
No. 3: European Christmas Market in St. Paul, Minnesota. Each winter, St. Paul’s Union Depot transforms into the European Christmas Market, a free event inspired by the open-air markets of Germany and Austria. Vendors sell handmade gifts and decorations, as well as European-inspired foods and drinks.
No. 2: Christkindlmarkt Bethlehem in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. It's only fitting that a town named Bethlehem would have a stellar Christmas market. This Pennsylvania town, nicknamed Christmas City, celebrates the season with an Old World-style Christkindlmarkt featuring handmade items from amazing artisans, food and festive performances.
No. 1 Carmel Christkindlmarkt in Carmel, Indiana. The Carmel Christkindlmarkt brings a bit of Saxony, Germany, to Indiana during this annual event. The market features the only Glühwein Pyramid in the U.S., standing 33 feet tall with more than 3,000 lights.
